Visual Journalism Final

Life of A Track Athlete For my visual journalism final, I chronicle my life as a track athlete. First off it is very hard to be any type of athlete let alone a track athlete. Electric Eel Powering Aquarium’s Christmas Lights The Tennessee Aquarium hopes the Christmas tree will spark love and appreciation for the unusual freshwater fish. An electric eel named Miguel Wattson is shocking visitors at the Tennessee Aquarium by using its blips of electricity to power Christmas lights. A system connected to his tank allowed the eel's shocks to power strands of lights on a nearby tree, resulting in rapid succession of blinking lights, according to a news release. The eel releases the low blips of electricity when it's trying to find food, aquarist Kimberly Hurt said. “The bigger flashes are caused by the higher voltage shocks he emits when he’s eating or excited," she said. The popular eel has boasted its own Twitter account, with a little help from Tennessee Tech University’s iCube center. Miguel shared in the excitement with posts such as "KA-BOOOOOOOM!!!!!" and "Quem não arrisca não petisca!" which translated to, "Th...

#19 Classmate Blog Critique

Classmate Blog Review For this particular assignment, me and my classmates had to critique a classmate's blog. Though all my classmates did exceptionally well on their blog, there was one classmate's blog that has a real knack for news. A classmate's blog that I really enjoyed was Elizabeth Nalley. First and foremost, I really like how her blog is set up. The layout reminds of the news broadcast of Nightly News with Lester Holt. Her blog can seen as executive news blog. I really like as u click on each of her stories, it pops up as magazine column which is exquisite. You can really see how she weaves her narrative in her blog. Her style of writing is very descriptive and interactive. Her writing shows professionalism as you would see in newspapers articles such as The Washington Post and New York Times. The specific blog Elizabeth did very well on to me was the first blog we had to published. It was Defining News. The way Elizabeth described and interpret news was ins...

China demands Trump veto bills on Hong Kong China has called on US President Donald Trump to veto legislation aimed at supporting Hong Kong's pro-democracy protest movement, warning it will retaliate if the Congress-backed bills become law. Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang on Thursday said the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act undermined Beijing's interests in the semi-autonomous territory, which has been rocked by months of anti-government demonstrations. The act mandates sanctions on Chinese and Hong Kong officials who carry out human rights abuses and requires an annual review of the favourable trade status that Washington grants Hong Kong.  Another bill prohibits export to Hong Kong police of certain non-lethal munitions, including tear gas, pepper spray, rubber bullets, water cannon, stun guns and tasers. "We urge the US to grasp the situation, stop its wrongdoing before it's too late, prevent this act from becoming law [...

SAU's Cafe Renovation? With the vast influx of student enrollment each year, SAU campus becomes more and more  full. With that being said, The Mulerider cafe is not large enough to fit about half of the enrollment here. It is extremely frustrating and uncomfortable to find a seat in the cafe.  Most don't bother to sit and eat they usually choose a to-go-plate to take back to the dorm than rather looking for a seat. Even with finding a seat, the tables are too small to even fit the amount of students eating in the cafe. People cannot enjoy their food without being bumped into from behind from having to scoot their chair up to fit more people in.  The cafe should be a place to sit down and relax to eat and not to the point of unpleasantness. The cafe should be more spacious and expansive. With Magnolia being a small town, you wouldn't expect much from the university. Also since it is a public university, SAU should be equipped enough to please one's ...

Drake booed off stage at Camp Flog Gnaw Festival Fans were highly upset when Drake appeared onstage instead of Frank Ocean as they anticipated. Drake got a less-than-enthusiastic welcome when he made a surprise appearance at Tyler, The Creator's annual Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival in Los Angeles. The Canadian hip-hop star performed for about 20 minutes Sunday night, according to Lindsay Beaman, who traveled to Los Angeles from Oregon to attend the festival. Beaman said she was happy to see Drake but added that many fans were expecting reclusive artist Frank Ocean to make a rare appearance. "We were excited when Drake went on stage, but he kept saying it was going to be his last song, so everyone assumed Frank was coming after Drake," Beaman said. "So he only got booed when he kept asking if we wanted him to stay on stage. And everyone said no 'cause they were ready for Frank to come out." Drake, whose full name is Aubrey Drake Graham, asked the crowd a...

Military leader of Congo has been found guilty of war crimes.  A former Congolese military leader has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for a series of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Bosco Ntaganda, who was the military operations chief of the Union of Congolese Patriots (UPC) militia in the Democratic Republic of Congo, was handed the sentence on Thursday after being found guilty in July. His charges include that of murder, rape, and conscripting child soldiers — some of whom were also raped and used as sex slaves. The 30-year sentence is the longest to be handed down by the International Criminal Court (ICC), which is situated in The Hague, in the Netherlands. It is also the first time the ICC has convicted someone for sexual slavery and sexual violence against their own troops, Human Rights Watch's deputy Africa director Ida Sawyer said. Rwandan-born Ntaganda, who wore a dark suit and red tie for the hearing, showed no emotion as he was handed his se...

Highest Sexual Assault or Rape Rates by Country Rape is unlawful sexual activity typically involving sexual intercourse done forcibly or under threat of injury against a person’s will. Rape is a worldwide problem. It is estimated that approximately 35% of women worldwide have experienced some form of sexual harassment in their lifetime. In the majority of countries that have data available on rape report that less than 40% of women who experience sexual violence seek help. Less than 10% seek help from law enforcement. Because many women who experience sexual violence rarely report or come forward about their incidences, exact rape numbers are challenging to report. While many countries have laws against the act of sexual assault and violence, many of them are insufficient, inconsistent, and not systematically enforced. While people mostly hear about rape and sexual assault against women, men around the world also experience sexual harassment, sexual assault, and ...
