Netflix partners with Nickelodeon in a multi-year output deal

Just days after Disney plus releases its streaming service, Netflix announces a deal with Nickelodeon. The partnership will produce original animated films and television series based on existing Nickelodeon characters and all-new ideas, according to a statement from Netflix.

“Nickelodeon has generated scores of characters that kids love, and we look forward to telling wholly original stories that re-imagine and expand on the worlds they inhabit,” Netflix vice president of original animation, Melissa Cobb said in a statement. The partnership has already produced specials like "Rocko's Modern Life: Static Cling" and "Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus." Up next are specials based on "The Loud House" and "Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," Netflix said. 

The goal is to "find fresh voices and bring bold stories to our global audience on Netflix," the company said. The announcement comes just days after the launch of Disney+, a streaming service that took plenty of kid-friendly content away from Netflix's platform. The family-friendly service provides 500 movies and 7,500 TV episodes, all that leverage iconic properties like the Disney studio itself, plus Pixar, Marvel, "Star Wars" and National Geographic. Netflix said the content created out of the new partnership with Nickelodeon is for kids and families around the world.

"Nickelodeon’s next step forward is to keep expanding beyond linear platforms, and our broader content partnership with Netflix is a key path toward that goal,” said Brian Robbins, President of Nickelodeon. "The ideas and work at our Studio are flowing, and we can’t wait to work with Melissa and the Netflix team on a premium slate of original animated content for kids and families around the world."
